Transport of dangerous goods

Hints and tips for consignors and carriers

The safe transport of dangerous goods requires a good understanding of the various rules and regulations.

Featured below is a guide to the key dangerous goods regulations for both consignors who wish to export freight and carriers.

Transport of dangerous goods – Advice for consignors

  • In order for an accurate quote to be given, UN number, Class and Packing Group information must all be supplied (see general information section for more details).

  • Useful additional information is weight, quantity and how the goods are packed.

  •  The loading point should give the carrier the Transport Document (Commonly known as the Dangerous Goods note) and instructions in writing to the driver (Trem card).

  • Written instructions should be in the language of the driver, and in all languages of the countries of origin, transit and destination.

Carriage of dangerous goods – Advice for carriers

  • You need to have a qualified appointed DGSA before you can carry dangerous goods – either in-house or appointed through a freight association.

  • Every vehicle carrying dangerous goods shall be equipped with 1 chock of a size suited to the weight of the vehicle and diameter of the wheels; 2 self standing warning signs; a suitable warning vest for each member of the vehicle crew; a pocket lamp; respiratory device if required by the hazard being carried; fire-fighting equipment.

  • Vehicles carrying dangerous goods should have appropriate placards on them.

  • Special licenses are required for carrying radioactive and certain explosive items.

Transport of dangerous good - General information

  • UN number – Always a four digit number

  • Class – There are nine classes. See the classes information below...

  • Packing group – Denoted with Roman numerals; there are 3 packing groups,
I, II, and III (the greater the hazard, the lower the packing group).

Documentation
Any carriage of dangerous goods (as governed by ADR) should be accompanied by the following information:

  • Transport Document (often referred to as the DGN) in the official language of the forwarding country, and if this is not English, French or German then also in one of the aforementioned languages.

  • Instructions in writing (Trem cards) - these should be in the language of the driver, and all languages of the country of origin, transit and destination.

Limited Quantities
When information is given regarding the weight, UN number, class, packing group and packaging details, it is possible to ascertain whether the goods fall under the threshold of full ADR or can be carried under Limited Quantities.

1.4S can carry an unlimited amount without coming under ADR regulations.

Note - 1.4S are a category of Class 1 (explosives).  The category implies that the explosive is small and contained / packed to withstand the small explosive nature. The most common example of this is airbags.
